Marching on the shoulders of those who have gone before you can bring out a sense of duty and responsibility.
This can either raise you up or bring you down.
Now is as good a time as any to begin dragging the efforts of the past into the current for the benefit of the future, and defend the honour of those passed with your own. So create your own vision of how things should be, and press ahead and produce your own legacy to encourage those that may follow you someday.
