Being a boss takes skill and not everyone has it. You have to be good with people, and not many managers are. It takes a skill to balance the rules with empathy for those under your care, because that’s what you ultimately are, the carer for the people you manage. Their welfare is in your hands, and rough hands make for restlessness and negativity from those you are supposedly managing.

Take stock of those you care for today, be them animal, child or adult, friend, family or colleague. Are you doing your best for them? What can you improve upon? and ask them what you need to do to make their life better.

Also turn this around on yourself, what do you need? What could others do for you? Don’t be afraid to voice your desires, for if you don’t, how will they know them.
